Jacksonville police officers responded to a pedestrian accident in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 3 in Jacksonville, only to discover the victim was already dead and the alleged perpetrator had fled the scene.
The accident reportedly occurred in the 8300 block of New Kings Road, which has been the site of an unusually large number of fatal pedestrian accidents this year. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a woman on the shoulder of the road. The victim was not immediately able to be identified, and neither was the exact time of the accident.
Police officers have continued to investigate in the following weeks and ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
There have been significantly more accidents on New Kings Road in 2016 compared to last year. The woman who contacted police for this particular incident said it is “scary” that there are so many people who routinely walk and ride their bikes on that stretch of road.
Several of the accidents in the area have been hit-and-run crashes. Anyone involved in an accident, no matter how serious, must remain at the scene until law enforcement officers arrive, or face significant penalties. If the accident results in injury or death, the person leaving the scene illegally may face felony criminal charges.
